A very special place

The Oasi is situated northwest of the centre of Fagagna and is part of the European network of Natura 2000. It is classified as natural protected area. The area of approximately 62 hectars owes its name to the artificial ponds once used for the quarrying of peat and clay. With various natural habitats, the Oasi boasts numerous species of plants and is home to small and large mammals and a rich population of birds.

In 1989 the oasis was established as a Fauna Centre and currently houses approximately 60 White storks and about 100 Hermit ibis, an endangered species. The Centre’s permanent exhibition is dedicated to the reintroduction projects of these two species.
